My Back-To-School Closet

The start of another school year means an excuse to add to my "teacher wardrobe." I tend to stick to classic, versatile pieces that are comfortable and easy to mix and match with one another (whatever it takes to make 5:30AM outfit selection as pain-free as possible!).

I hesitate to spend a lot of money on any one item simply because of daily preschool wear and tear: a disproportionate amount of my time is spent mixing paint, kneeling on the floor, wiping noses, and yielding sticky-fingered hugs. None of the items pictured here cost more than $35, which means I won't feel that sad if something gets spilled on or stained (likely).

I need to replace my TOMS, pick up another pair of my favorite go-to skinny jeans as well as a pair of black leggings/cigarette pants, and then I think I'm almost ready to greet fall.

Does anyone have a recommendation for a quality leather shoulder bag that won't break the bank (like under $100)? I need something durable enough to fit my ipad, lesson plan book, and all my usual purse contents, but haven't been able to find anything. This is the one I love (not happening) and this is the one I would consider splurging on, though I'd prefer to purchase something with a considerably lower price tag. Help?

  1. Whilst I don't have any fashion recos, I can appreciate the lovely polka dots and stripes in your choices. Just my kinda style! :)

  2. Have you tried Macys? My mother loves these type of bags because you can fit so much and she always finds good priced ones at Macys, plus they always have coupons. Btw, love your style very comfortable yet classy.

    1. I sometimes feel like the big department stores are hit or miss, but the huge 34th street Macys is two blocks from my school, so I think I'll have to pop in!

  3. Kayla - the J. Crew factory outlet makes that same bag :) (http://www.jcrew.com/womens_factory_category/scarvesandaccessories/PRDOVR~50432/99102820773/ENE~1+2+3+22+4294967294+20~~~205+17+4294966177~15~~~~~~~/50432.jsp)

    1. Haha, Hi Chelsea! Not weird at all. How are you? It's been, what 5, 6 years?

The stuff pictured was mostly found on sale at nicer places (jCrew, Ann Taylor, etc.) or from less expensive stores (h&m, forever 21, old navy). I look for easily washable, transitional pieces I can wear all year with jeans and leggings, since that's what's most comfortable for me in a room filled with three-year-olds. The pink sheer shirt was originally $70, but I waited until it went on sale for $30. Normally, if I pay full price for an item, I won't wear it to work. (Right now there are tons of cute, inexpensive things in stores because of back-to-school deals).

  8. I'm on the hunt for the perfect black bag (a black leather crossbody to be exact), too. Unfortunately, I haven't found one with a reasonable price tag.

  11. Try the Audrey Brooke line at DSW (or from various online retailers). I just found the Vachetta leather tote in tan (http://www.dsw.com/handbag/audrey+brooke+vachetta+leather+tote?prodId=243132) there, marked down to $60 from $200. With a $20 off coupon, it was $43 -- a deal too good to pass up. It's a really sturdy, roomy, timeless-looking bag that I think is going to last me quite a few years.

  12. I have a big brown bag like this one: http://www.hm.com/us/product/02027?article=02027-B#article=02027-B from H&M that I use to carry my laptop and law school text books and it has held up surprisingly well for only being $35, plus I get tons of compliments on it, which is always nice.

Also I love that top shirt and your sparkly ballet flats, too cute!
