Read any great books lately? This is the content of my current nightstand stack. I'm hoping to plow through them all within the next month or so: I'm eager to honor my commitment of reading an actual book for an uninterrupted hour (or two) each day. I started Gone Girl yesterday and cannot put it down.
Anything else you'd recommend? I need to start compiling my fall reading list to help make my September commute a little less...bemoaning.
Tell me about Gone Girl, you're the second blogger to mention it this week!
ReplyDeleteMy fall list includes any book I can get my hands on by F. Scott Fitzgerald. Mary Higgins Clark is great, as is her memoir Kitchen PrivIleges.
It's so good! Granted, I'm only 1/3 of the way through, but in a nutshell: beautiful wife disappears on the day of her 5th wedding anniversary. does her husband have something to do with it?
DeleteSo far, it's witty, whip-smart, suspenseful, fast-paced...highly recommend!
Oh books, my biggest weakness! I LOVED The marriage plot. I know some people think it was slow but maybe because I happened to have been in a similar relationship as the main character, I couldn't put it down. The dialog and everything is so realistic that sometimes I wondered if Eugenedes went through all of this...How can you possible make it up?
ReplyDeleteI try to vary one fiction and one non-fiction, so that I actually learn something new from reading....The last book I read was called White Bread and it discussed the origins of Wonder Bread in America and its political and sociological impact on the country and the world. Very interesting read about America's relationship with its bread. There are a few more "product-specific" books that I want to read...Tomatoland: How Modern Industrial Agriculture Destroyed Our Most Alluring Fruit and Extra Virginity: The Sublime and Scandalous World of Olive Oil.
I'm a nerd:)
Maya, I have reservations about The Marriage Plot because so many people keep hinting that it's slow and boring. I'l at least give it a try, since the story sounds enticing.
DeleteThe beginning is indeed slow...and the book/author references made me skip paragraphs. But I love his writing style so much. You can honestly skip paragraphs without missing on the story. I think he got a bit overboard with the character building....I'm still his die-hard fan but don;t want to wait another 6 years for his next book!!
DeleteOh and the book you're reading reminded me of a good crime/thriller one I read recently "Gone, baby, gone". I think the movie is also pretty good.
DeleteYes, I know it. Loved the film.
DeleteI loved The Night Circus {Brandi gave it to me}. Just finished The Flight of Gemma Hardy {a modern re-working of the Jane Eyre story} and really enjoyed it. Also read the final Sisterhood the Traveling Pants book and cried a fair bit. I enjoyed 22 Britannia Road- though it was a bit heavy and depressing at times, the ending felt hopeful.
ReplyDeleteI've read A LOT of books this summer. Paris, My Sweet is on my bedside table, too!
The Night Circus is on my list! I read one chapter in the bookstore and promptly wrote myself a note to order a copy.
DeleteJust finished French Kids Eat Everything by Karen Le Billon and, besides being a quick, easy read, it sparked some awesome conversations and deep thinking about all things food.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the awesome fiction recos!
Mm, adding it to my list. I read "Bringing up Bebe" and loved it.
DeleteI actually don't know any of these books. You'll have to tell us which you recommend. I am currently listening to The Book Thief and loving it.
ReplyDeleteLOVED Seating Arrangements; also on my Amazon wishlist are Beautiful Ruins, The Last Nude, The Innocents, The Receptionist, and everything on your nightstand, naturally.
ReplyDeleteWhat a great stack! I'm reading "But Beautiful" by Geoff Dyer - he's one of my favorites!
ReplyDeleteGone Girl is awesome... you'll finish it soon! :)
